Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying these medications must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you become starving," said one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle changes.
